I had a terrible habit! I was a smoker! I couldn’t go anywhere without my pack of cigarettes and a lighter. If I ever lost or forgot my cigatettes or lighter, I would also lose my mind. Those little sticks of cancer really had a grip on me. I needed to get away from them before it was too late! That’s when I started studying self hypnosis to stop smoking.
I already knew a lot about conversational hypnosis, but didn’t know much when it came to self hypnosis. I honestly thought that it was all just a bunch of hype, but then as I started reading more into it, I realized that self hypnosis is basicaly NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). There is science that backs NLP, so it can’t be all hype! Science doesn’t believe in hype!
Although it would be impossible to share with you every single detail about how I used self hypnosis to stop smoking, I will share the basics with you. Hopefully, this post will motivate you to want to learn more about this stuff, and ultimately finally escape from the grasp of death known as cigarettes!
The Mindset
You have to have the right mindset. It’s very easy to say “I want to quit smoking”, but so many people say those words, and never take action. If you were to rephrase that same self-talk sentence to “I must quit smoking or I will not live to see my grandchildren grow older”, the chances of your mind WANTING to take action will be much higher.
See, as humans, we naturally want to do whatever it takes to avoid pain and experience pleausure. Unfortunately, we do a very crappy job of evaluating long-term pain or pleasure. Those cigarettes that you love to smoke so much bring you a lot of pleasure when they go to your lips. When your longs inhale the toxic smoke, your brain sends signals of pleasure throughout your body! Your body and brain are way too happy to even consider the long term effects of smoking- even though deep down, you know that smoking can kill you!
I highly recommend checking out a few books on NLP. You will learn so much more about the pain -vs- pleasure battle that goes on inside of us every day.
The Punishment
Once you get the right mindset and realize that you will experience much more pain in the future from smoking, you can start to reinforce this mindset. Here is how I did it:
Every time I had a single thought of smoking a cigarette, I would drop down and do 25 push-ups. Instead of thinking about smoking, I immediately switched my focus to getting in shape and doing push-ups. During the first few days, this was shear punishment. I thought of smoking A LOT; therefore, I did A LOT of push-ups!
After a few days of this punishment, my body started to get pleasure out of doing push-ups. I noticed my arms getting bigger, and I felt much more in shape! During the times that I usually thought of smoking a cigarette, my mind said “wait a minute guy… I like doing push-ups much more than smoking! Let’s do push-up’s instead!”
3 Months Later
It has been three months since I started to trick my mind into wanting to do push-ups instead of wanting a cigarette. It has been about two-and-a-half months since I had my last cigarette! If anyone ever tells you that self hypnosis can’t be used to stop smoking, send them to this blog!
